Winning vs. teams that finish in Top 25

As the fallout continues from Georgia’s 35-7 blowout loss to South Carolina last Saturday, you’re starting to see more and more records popping up concerning who Mark Richt has and hasn’t beaten.

It doesn’t help matters for the Bulldogs that they’re off this week, which only allows the frustration in Dawg Land to fester.

But since the 2008 season, Richt is 2-14 against teams that finished the season nationally ranked. That includes an 0-10 mark against SEC teams that finished the season in the Top 25 of the Associated Press poll.

Obviously, that’s the kind of record that feeds fans’ frustrations, but how does it compare with that of other SEC coaches?

Thanks to some research by ESPN’s Stats & Info group, we have an answer.

Below is a look at the records for SEC coaches (at their current school) against teams that finished the season nationally ranked. Only three coaches have winning records, and Richt is actually fourth on the list even though he has a losing record. Missouri’s Gary Pinkel, Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin, Ole Miss’ Hugh Freeze and Arkansas’ John L. Smith aren’t included because this is their first year as head coaches in the SEC:
