Could Alabama be favored vs. NFL teams?
By Edward Aschoff
The jokes about Alabama taking on an NFL team are nothing new. For weeks, we've all sarcastically thrown out the idea of putting Alabama up against one of the NFL's worst just to see what would happen.
None of us really think Alabama could actually beat one of these professional football teams, do we? Do we?
Well, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier threw his hat into the ring of potential believers on Wednesday when he said on "The Dan Patrick Show" that he thinks Alabama could be favored against some NFL teams.
"Alabama, gosh, they look like they could beat a couple of those NFL teams that I've watched on Sundays," Spurrier said. "I think a lot of the oddsmakers out there that usually know what's going on, I'd guess Alabama would be favored by a little bit."
I don't know if Spurrier actually thinks Alabama could beat an NFL team, but his comments, like a lot of people's, just go to show you how big the gap is between Alabama and the rest of the country. This team isn't flashy and it isn't going to put up Playstation-like numbers, but it's extremely sound and very disciplined in all areas.
Do I think it could beat one of the NFL's worst teams? No. Could last year's? No. The college game is so much different. Everyone is bigger, faster and stronger in the pros, just like how Alabama is bigger, stronger and faster than the competition right now. But physical differences and the knowledge is just so different.
Alabama has a major test this weekend with LSU, especially with that Tigers defense, but another strong showing and Bama fans will be picking apart the hotel rooms in Miami ... if they haven't already.
