La Secla to start at QB for San Jose State

For more than three quarters on Saturday, San Jose State appeared poised for an upset of No. 16 Utah. Although the Spartans lost the game 24-14, they might have found their starting quarterback.

Coach Dick Tomey said Monday that Jordan La Secla would be the team’s starter heading into this weekend’s game against Stanford.

“Jordan, I think played really well against a really good Utah team and that’s the most he’s ever played,” Tomey said. “I would say we’re going to start Jordan, but Kyle Reed’s going to still play a lot of football. He’ll be an important part of this football team because the main thing a quarterback’s got to do it win the game and we didn’t get that done.”

La Secla, who had been battling with Reed for the starting quarterback duties since last spring, was 22-for-34 for 269 yards and a touchdown in the Utah loss. He also threw an interception when he attempted a Hail Mary pass at the end of the game, but Tomey said he didn’t count it against La Secla because it was a Hail Mary.

During a 56-3 loss to USC in the season opener, La Secla and Reed split time and Tomey said that was a gameplan going into the Utah game. But La Secla took almost every snap and nearly led his team to a victory. Reed was 0-for-1.

“For the most extended action that he’s had, Jordan played very, very well,” Tomey said.
