Hokies are going bowling
By Heather Dinich
Virginia Tech was juuuust good enough to get to a bowl game this season.
The Hokies beat in-state rival Virginia, 17-14, in Blacksburg to earn their sixth win of the season and become bowl eligible for the 20th straight season thanks to a 29-yard field goal by Cody Journell with four seconds remaining. It was Virginia Tech's ninth straight win over rival Virginia, and it didn't come easy. The Hokies trailed 14-7 after Virginia scored on a fumble recovery, but Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas helped gain the momentum back when he directed a a 15-play, 85-yard touchdown drive that tied the game at 14 with 1:25 left in the third quarter.
Offense was difficult to come by for both teams, but Virginia was held to just 30 rushing yards on 20 attempts and was 3-of-14 on third downs with two turnovers.
This game wasn't pretty for either offense, and quite frankly, it's a good thing there wasn't a national audience for this one. There wasn't much to brag about for either team. The Hokies can exhale now knowing that they at least extended their season and avoided the embarrassment of missing a bowl game. Now they've got to find enough offense to win one more game.
