Alvarez to earn $118,500 for coaching Rose
By Adam Rittenberg
Barry's back, and he's not working for free.
Wisconsin's Barry Alvarez served as the school's athletic director and football coach from 2003-05 but earned just one salary.
"No más," Alvarez said after Friday's meeting with the school's athletic board.
Alvarez hoped to receive $225,000 for coaching Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl while continuing his duties as AD. The amount equals one-twelfth of former coach Bret Bielema's compensation package. Alvarez never was seeking two separate salaries, just one increased compensation for doing the two jobs.
Turns out, he'll get a little more, but not as much as he sought from the school's board of regents.
From the Associated Press:
Alvarez will receive $195,000 in December, which is 90 percent of Bielema's monthly coaching salary. He will also get $8,500, which is 10 percent of his athletic director salary. The total pay of $203,500 is a one-time $118,500 increase in his monthly salary.
Alvarez also can earn $50,000 for guiding Wisconsin to a Rose Bowl win, which would be his fourth such victory as Badgers coach. Wisconsin interim chancellor David Ward called the one-month compensation package "fair and proportional."
We tend to agree.
