3-point stance: Saban sticking around

By Ivan Maisel

1. A national radio reporter who either doesn’t read sports news or just wanted to prod Alabama coach Nick Saban with a stick asked Tuesday morning at a press conference if Saban would put to rest discussion of a return to the NFL. “How many times do you think I've been asked this question?” Saban responded. “How many times do you think I've been asked to put it to rest? And I've put it to rest, and you continue to ask it.” He’s not going anywhere, people.

2. Kudos to the Orange Bowl for bringing the major individual award winners to the BCS National Championship. It is a well-deserved perk. The players, including Heisman winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M and Biletnikoff winner Marqise Lee of USC, held a press conference Sunday. The Orange Bowl introduced them on the field to the 80,120 fans at Sun Life Stadium on Monday night. Ideas like these are a smart way for the game to celebrate itself.

3. Another awardee in attendance, Outland Trophy-winning left tackle Luke Joeckel of Texas A&M, announced Tuesday that he will forego his final season of eligibility to enter the NFL draft, where he will be one of the first to get a hug from commissioner Roger Goodell. Sophomore guard Cedric Ogbuehi, who played alongside Joeckel, likely will shift to left tackle. Between Ogbuehi and right tackle Jake Matthews (if he remains in school), Johnny Football should have plenty of time to make magic again in 2013.
