Report: Nebraska's Heard seeks transfer
By Brian Bennett
Is Braylon Heard leaving Nebraska?
A report out of Ohio on Monday night said the junior running back will transfer from the Huskers to a school closer to his hometown of Youngstown. However, Nebraska coach Bo Pelini told the Lincoln Journal Star that he had not talked with Heard or anyone associated with the player about a possible transfer. Pelini said he and his staff were surprised by the report. Heard attended the same high school -- Cardinal Mooney -- as Pelini.
Heard ran for 357 yards and three touchdowns last year, averaging 6.7 yards per carry. But he remains stuck behind Ameer Abdullah on the I-back depth chart, and the Huskers also have promising power back Imani Cross. The team briefly tried Heard out at cornerback last offseason.
He was part of a trio of young runners that had Nebraska fans excited for the future a couple of years ago, along with Aaron Green and Abdullah. Green has already transferred, to TCU.
If Heard were to leave, Nebraska's running game shouldn't miss a beat with Abdullah, Cross and incoming recruits Terrell Newby and Adam Taylor. But its experienced depth would take a hit. And it would be a shame if the Huskers didn't get more out of a guy with so much athletic ability.
