3-point stance: Own the decision, coach
By Ivan Maisel
1. Really? Brian Kelly doesn't think that Notre Dame-Michigan is one of those historic, traditional rivalries for which the Irish is known? Tell that to Reggie Ho. Tell that to the Rocket. Tell it to the fans whose hearts are still racing after the dramatic 2011 game. Why resort to such transparent gamesmanship? Does Kelly really think anyone will buy such nonsense? Notre Dame chose the ACC alliance at the expense of the Michigan rivalry. Tough decision, yes. Kelly should own it.
2. The depth of talent at quarterback across the country became a staple of preseason coverage. And now, to the Manziels and Mariotas and Bridgewaters, we can add three freshmen: redshirt freshman Jameis Winston fulfilled every single outlandish prediction in leading Florida State past Pittsburgh; Baker Mayfield of Texas Tech threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns; and Jared Goff of Cal made a few mistakes (three picks) but he threw for 445 yards against Northwestern. This could be fun.
3. It’s a nice little note: Mayfield, the Red Raiders walk-on, became the first Red Raiders freshman quarterback to be named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week since his head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, won it in 1999. But that’s not the takeaway. Get this: from 2006-10, these freshmen quarterbacks won this award: Taylor Martinez, Landry Jones, Nick Florence, Robert Griffin III, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy and Josh Freeman. Mayfield joined a special group.
