Top stats to know: BCS Standings
By Katie Sharp
A look at the top stats to know from the first release of the BCS Standings.
Crimson Tide at the top
Alabama is No. 1 in the initial standings for the second year in a row, the first team to do that since Ohio State in 2006-07.
But what does that mean for their chances at a national championship.
Well, last year they won the national championship after being No. 1 in the initial standings. But they were actually the first team to do that since USC in 2004.
Alabama has been ranked in 41 straight BCS standings, the longest active streak among all teams.
This is the fifth time that the defending champion opens atop the BCS standings; only Alabama last year and USC in 2005 made it back to the BCS National Championship Game (and the Trojans 2004 title was later vacated).
Seminoles in prime position
Florida State is ranked in the top 2 in the initial standings for the first time since 1999, when they opened at No. 1 and went 12-0 and won the National Championship.
This is Florida State’s highest ranking since it was No. 2 in the final poll of 2000.
Florida State is the first ACC team to be ranked in the top 2 since Boston College was No. 2 the week of October 28, 2007. The last ACC team to be ranked in the top 2 in the initial standings was Miami (FL) in 2004 (also No. 2).
A 1-2 title game?
Alabama is No. 1 and Florida State is No. 2 in the initial standings. Will we be seeing them in the National Championship Game in January? Consider this:
Only twice - 2005 and 2011 - have both No. 1 and No. 2 in the first BCS Standings finished in the top 2 spots and played for the National Championship.
In 1998 and 2008, neither of the two teams that finished 1st or 2nd began in the top 2.
The team debuting at No. 1 has finished in the top 2 spots barely half the time (eight of 15).
Also, the team debuting at No. 2 finished in the top 2 spots has finished in the top two spots less than half the time (seven of 15)
Of the 30 teams to play for the BCS Championship, 11 were No. 4 or lower in the initial BCS Standings.
Ducks in the Hunt
Oregon opens at No. 3 in the initial standings for the second straight year and is in Top 3 in initial BCS standings for the third time (also in 2010, No. 2).
Oregon is ranked in the top 3 for the 14th week all-time, with each of them since 2007. In that span, no other Pac-12 school has been ranked No. 1 or No. 2 or No. 3.
With Stanford ranked No. 6, this is the first time that the Pac-12 had had two teams ranked No. 6 or better in the initial BCS Standings.
Also of note …
The No. 7 ranking is Miami’s highest in the initial standings since 2004 (opened No. 2) and their highest ranking in any week since it was No. 3 the week of Nov. 12, 3005.
Florida State, Miami and Clemson give the ACC three teams in the top 10 of the initial standings for the first time.
This is the first time Baylor has been ranked in the initial BCS standings.
No. 13 LSU is not ranked in the top 10 of the standings for the first time since the final standings of 2010, snapping a streak of 16 straight weeks in the top 10, which was the third-longest active streak entering this season.
