Baylor adds another OL to 2014 class
By Damon Sayles
Baylor had made it a priority to focus on the offensive line for its 2014 class. On Saturday, the Bears picked up their third offensive lineman and eighth overall commit of the class.
Offensive tackle Patrick Lawrence (Waxahachie, Texas/Waxahachie) gave Baylor his verbal commitment during an unofficial visit to Baylor. A 6-foot-6, 255-pound lineman, Lawrence joins three-star tackle Josh Pelzel (Rockdale, Texas/Rockdale) and guard Devonte Jones (Bellaire, Texas/Bellaire) as the guys up front, along with Jordan Feuerbacher (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood Park), who is expected to line up as a flex tight end for the Bears.
Lawrence picked up the Baylor offer last month at the Bears’ spring game and said he and his family have had Baylor high on their list for a while. He was recruited to Baylor by running backs coach Jeff Lebby. Lawrence chose Baylor over offers from Oregon State, Texas Tech, Michigan State, Arizona State and others.
“It was the location and coaching staff, and the education Baylor has to offer is second to none,” Lawrence said. “Their new stadium and all the facilities really sold me. My family and I had really been thinking about it for a long time, and I just decided to pull the trigger. We firmly believe in the decision.”
Lawrence was a second-team all-district tackle at Waxahachie, which advanced to the Texas Class 4A Division I playoffs this past season. He helped Waxahachie’s offense average 248 rushing yards a game.
“I still have a lot of people contacting me, but for now, this is a lot of pressure off my shoulders,” Lawrence said of his commitment. “It feels good to say I’m a Baylor Bear. It’s definitely a lot of stress released.”
