Early Offer: ACC showdown will impress
By Jeremy Crabtree
The Early Offer is RecruitingNation's regular feature, giving you a daily dose of recruiting in the mornings. Today's offerings: The winner of Saturday’s Florida State-Clemson game will have something big to sell to recruits; one of Wisconsin’s earliest commitments is taking trips to other schools, including a trip to visit former Badgers coach Bret Bielema; and the nation’s No. 7 player and a top tight end are expected to announce this weekend.
FSU-Clemson has recruiting ramifications Recruits from across the Southeast are on a beeline to Clemson, S.C., this weekend to watch the No. 3 Tigers host No. 5 Florida State in the biggest game of the college football season so far. Recruiting Nation’s Corey Dowlar accurately points out that the Tigers and Seminoles haven’t clashed head to head for many prospects in the 2014 class, but a victory Saturday on a national stage will make an impression with prospects. “This game has huge recruiting implications,” one ACC assistant said. “Coaches always want to be able to sell playing in big games, and for both teams, it doesn’t get much bigger than this. It’s a game that’s going to impact that national title race, and every coach wants to sell a kid on the opportunity to play for a national championship. Saturday’s winner gets to do that.” Some of the better players expected include five-star linebacker Raekwon McMillan (Hinesville, Ga./Liberty County), five-star cornerback Marlon Humphrey (Hoover, Ala./Hoover), four-star receiver Josh Malone (Gallatin, Tenn./Station Camp), four-star cornerback D.J. Smith (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and four-star defensive end Andrew Williams (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing Christian), but that’s just a small sampling of the blue-chippers expected.
Should Wisconsin worry? The Badgers have always -- and I mean always -- dominated in-state recruiting, so it was a little surprising to see longtime Wisconsin commit and three-star offensive guard George Panos (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) take a trip to NC State this past weekend. Panos told several folks after the visit there was nothing to be concerned about and he was solid on his commitment, but the Badgers might have to sweat things out a little bit longer. Panos, the nation’s No. 40 offensive guard, said he is considering an official visit to Arkansas, the school where former Badgers coach Bret Bielema is coaching. Panos originally committed to Bielema in 2012 before he left for Arkansas, so there is a longstanding relationship.
Big announcement on tap One very high-profile prospect is expected to make his decisions at some point this weekend. Five-star defensive end Myles Garrett of Arlington (Texas) Martin is expected to make his announcement on either Friday or Saturday. The top prospect in Texas has been leaning toward Texas A&M for quite some time, and an announcement for anybody else would be one of the biggest recruiting upsets in recent memory.
