High three-star athlete Tristan Mumford (Statesville, N.C.) has turned down scholarship offers from BCS Conference programs and elected to give East Carolina a verbal commitment, multiple sources report.
Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Wake Forest also offered Mumford. Clemson, South Carolina and Virginia Tech were among the other programs showing interest.
The versatile 6-foot-1, 230-pound Mumford has lined up at running back, quarterback, linebacker and defensive tackle during his high school career. According to the Statesville Record & Landmark, he'll play linebacker for the Pirates.
“Actually, that is what I want to play,” Mumford told the Record & Landmark. “They looked at me my freshman year as a linebacker because that is what I played.”
Mumford continued, “It’s like I told everybody, it felt like home to me. I talked to the coaches and everything was clicking. Everybody just has that good personality I like. I want to be around positive people.”
Mumford is currently rated as the nation's No. 47 ATH.
