Scouts: Bulldogs secure top in-state OG

The Bulldogs landed the top in-state center prospect a year ago and now have landed a verbal from the top guard prospect in the state as Deon Mix (Batesville, Miss./South Panola) committed this weekend. Out of a prominent in-state high school program, Mix is a player who should arrive on campus with experience competing against good competition on a regular basis and some understanding of what it takes to win.

As a player he is a big bodied kid who can be a road grading run blocker as a guard in the SEC. He needs to watch his pad level and continue to strive for more consistency in his technique, but this is a big dude that can came off the ball and deliver a powerful initial pop that can jolt and snap defenders back and create daylight for ball carriers. Some developmental time will likely be needed as a pass blocker, but if he can stay low he presents a big obstacle inside that can be tough to try and overpower.

We don’t see an immediate contributor in Mix and Mississippi State should be able to get away with red-shirting him. What the big man does he does well and that is drive defenders off the ball, but there is need for further development. He may not offer the same type of wide range ability that some of the other OG prospects rated ahead of him might, but he is a big kid who can help open running lanes and develop into a stout presence inside as a pass blocker and he is a very good in-state pick-up for the Bulldogs.
