Scouts: Bruins bolster O-line

As UCLA embarks on a new era, the staff works to try and build and strengthen the offensive trenches for the future. The Bruins class, which had already consisted of verbals from three O-line prospects, yesterday received a commitment from ESPN 300 OG John Lopez. Arguably their biggest pick-up along the offensive line in the short time since new coach Jim Mora Jr. took over, the local prospect is a big body with the physical tools to develop into a productive player for the Bruins.

He could potentially help UCLA at tackle, but will likely be a better fit at guard. He needs to continue to develop and improve in areas like hand usage and pad level, but he is a big guy who has the size, strength and toughness to push defenders off the ball in the run game. In pass protection he can deliver a good punch, and while he needs to keep refining his footwork, he demonstrates that he is capable of mirroring rushers and getting the job done. Lopez is a good pick-up for the Bruins as they keep a local prospect at home and more importantly he has the tools to help UCLA strengthen its O-line.
