Junior athlete Luke Gifford (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) has committed to play for his hometown Huskers, journalstar.com reports. Gifford could play safety, or eventually grow into a tight end or linebacker, for Nebraska.
He committed to coach Bo Pelini during Monday's practice.
“He told me, ‘Welcome to the family. You just made the football team better,’ ” Gifford said. "I had really known from the beginning that I wanted to be a Husker."
North Dakota, Ohio and Toledo also extended early scholarship offers to the 6-foot-3, 195-pound prospect. Iowa, Iowa State, South Dakota State, Tulsa and UCLA showed interest.
Gifford registered 99 tackles and two interceptions at safety last season.
