To be honest, I have been surprised by the caliber of player Bill O'Brien has been able to bring in to Penn State. Of course, we all realize that that the numbers are going to be low, but this is a significant upgrade from what I felt he would be able to bring in. QB-PP Michael O’Connor may be one of the biggest sleepers in this class and should be able to redshirt, which is huge. I would argue that wide receivers De'Andre Thompkins and Chris Godwin are as good as any receivers Penn State has secured in the past six or seven classes, at least since Derrick Williams.
The reality is that this will all come down to numbers. Even if they are talented, will they have enough of it? Can they avoid injuries? I will be very interested to see how recruiting continues for the Nittany Lions if they start to struggle on the field. Will enthusiasm wane? Will more questions come up about just how long the struggles could extend past the end of their probation? I think O’Brien has the right approach and what he is selling is resonating with prospects. If they can get consistent QB play, it will help their team’s fortunes tremendously. They are going to be fun to watch. If O'Brien can get kids to stand by them knowing they can’t play for a championship or bowl game, imagine what he might be able to do with some future classes that will be able to.
