Tight end Arshad Jackson (Hampton, Ga./Lovejoy) was prepared for Sunday’s news that Auburn head coach Gene Chizik would not be retained following a disappointing 3-9 season.
“I heard the news and I was kind of sad that Gene Chizik got fired, but I kind of knew it would happen,” Jackson said. “Seeing how bad they were losing and then with violations, I saw it coming.”
Last week, Jackson hinted that a change might occur if Chizik is let go, and he did not deny that might still be the case. But for right now, Jackson wants to discuss things some more with the people around him.
“I am sticking to what I said, which was if Gene Chizik gets fired, my move is going to be to Florida State,” Jackson said. “I have not decommitted yet because I have not talked in depth with my mom. When I talked to her on the phone today, she said I should still show some respect to the new coaches at Auburn. She knows I want to go to FSU and she respects that, but she wants me to talk to my high school coaches and the Florida State coaches. She wants me to get a better understanding for how they want me and to get to know them better.”
A decision could still come soon for the three-star prospect.
“I cannot see myself committing to them right now, but it will happen soon, maybe sometime soon in December after I take my official,” Jackson said. “I still want to take officials to Auburn, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State, too.”
On Saturday, Jackson accompanied close friend and ESPN 300 defensive end Davin Bellamy (Chamblee, Ga./Chamblee) on an unofficial visit to Tallahassee, Fla., to watch the Seminoles take on in-state rival Florida. The outcome of the game did not affect Jackson’s perception of the trip.
“The visit was awesome and the coaches were really nice,” Jackson said. “They had a bad loss but at the same time, they reacted well and it was good to see some of the other recruits.”
Bellamy made sure that Jackson saw the potential impact he could make if he were to join him at Florida State.
“Every time a tight end would make a big play, whether it was a catch or a big block, Davin would point and let me know,” Jackson said.
