Defensive tackle Dontavius Russell (Carrollton, Ga./Carrollton) would rather not talk about the final game of his junior season, a five-overtime loss to Marist in the second round of the playoffs. But after finishing with 58 tackles and three sacks, the 6-foot-3, 300-pound prospect is happy to report two colleges have extended verbal offers.
“I was waiting and hoping for an offer to come, and for Georgia Tech to offer first was really surprising,” Russell said. “I was happy. I know they run the same defense I am used to in high school, but I have yet to visit and do not know too much about them yet.”
Florida was next to inform Russell of an early scholarship offer, this one coming from the Gators head coach himself.
“Coach Will Muschamp came to my school and told me while I was working out and asked if I would like to play for Florida,” Russell said. “Then he offered me. That mean a lot getting an SEC offer and I could not believe the head coach himself came to my school. I cannot wait to visit and learn more about the program.”
Russell has offers from Alabama, Auburn and a few other programs, including Georgia. He admits to hoping the Bulldogs come through with an offer.
“An offer from Georgia would mean a lot because they run a similar defense, too, and I really liked meeting Coach Mark Richt when I went to the game against Georgia Southern,” Russell said.
