Quarterback Shuler Bentley (Duncan, S.C./Byrnes) committed to sign with Old Dominion. Coastal Carolina and Delaware also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-1, 180-pound prospect. Clemson and Duke showed interest.
"It's very exciting," he told the Spartanburg (S.C) Herald-Journal. "They are making a jump to Conference USA. Their quarterback throws it all over the place. He threw for 5,100 yards and broke [Steve] McNair's record. Their offense sparked my interest. It was something I felt like I wanted to be a part of. I also fit in really well with the coaches."
Bentley exploded on the scene as a sophomore in 2011 when he completed 235 of 363 attempts (64.7 percent) for 3,495 yards, 47 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
He followed up that performance by completing 299 of 462 passes for (64.7 percent) for 4,718 yards, 59 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2012 and was named South Carolina's Gatorade Player of the Year.
Bentley is Old Dominion's second pledge for 2014. Defensive tackle Brandon Tyson (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) committed in April.
