Committed WR Cathey exploring options

By Dave Hooker

Nikia Cathey is still committed to Mississippi State. Sort of.

The receiver from Memphis (Tenn.) Westwood said he is considering other schools after committing to the Bulldogs in January. Cathey was dismayed with his chosen school since assistant coach Tim Brewster left Mississippi State and joined Florida State's coaching staff.

Cathey has told recruiters from several schools he has interest in exploring other options. Tennessee, Miami, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Indiana and Michigan are some of the schools that have continued to recruit Cathey despite his previous commitment.

"Ever since coach Brewster left MSU, I tell them I've opened my recruiting back up," the 5-foot-9, 177-pound prospect said. "But I'm still solid with MSU right now."

Cathey said he plans to visit Indiana and Tennessee in April. He said he believes the Volunteers and Ohio State are close to offering him a scholarship.

"I think one is coming very soon from Ohio State and Tennessee," said Cathey, who also has shown interest in nearby Memphis.

Tennessee has made a positive impression. When asked what he thought about the Volunteers' new coaching staff, Cathey said, "Great. I really like [head coach] Butch Jones."

Distance from Ohio State is proving to be a hurdle for the Buckeyes. Cathey will need to view Columbus in person before being able to truly evaluate OSU.

"I haven't been there yet, because I haven't had the time, because it's a little kind of far but [tight ends/fullbacks] coach Tim Hinton came down here to see me," Cathey said. "I talk to him every week. He's a very nice coach."

The interest from Indiana and Michigan is recent. Both schools seem to be in the running.

"Great schools," Cathey said, "especially Michigan."
