Some top big men in 'northern' South

By Dave Hooker

Road-graders are typically huge in the deep South. However, there are some big men that college recruiters are chasing in the "northern" South: specifically Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. Here are some big men to watch in the region:

OT Alex Bars (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell): Bars, who is 6-foot-6 and 285 pounds, has expressed interest in southern teams such as Tennessee and Georgia. However, he has strong ties to northern schools. His father played at Notre Dame. He has brothers that play at Michigan and Penn State. The Wolverines look tough to beat. Bars spent Thanksgiving with Michigan's coaching staff. That seems to be a hint but Bars hasn't said much. He is thought to be close to a decision but hasn't said so publicly.

DT Matt Elam (Elizabethtown, Ky./John Hardin): Kentucky, Louisville and Alabama are set to visit Elam this week. Several schools have already come through. Elam said he believes Purdue is close to offering him a scholarship. The 6-foot-6, 350-pound prospect has scholarship offers from Alabama, Kentucky, Louisville and Western Kentucky.

DT Joshua Frazier (Springdale, Ark./Har Ber): The 6-4, 336-pound Frazier has nine scholarship offers. There are some notables on the list, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Southern California. Frazier recently visited Arkansas and spoke highly of the coaching staff, specifically its genuine nature. Frazier said he plans to visit Auburn, Alabama and maybe Texas A&M this summer.

DT Bijhon Jackson (El Dorado, Ark./El Dorado): Jackson, who is 6-2 and 327 pounds, committed to Arkansas in December. He hasn't shown serious interest in other schools since. Jackson is rated the No. 66 prospect in the nation, the No. 5 defensive tackle and the top prospect in Arkansas.

DT Charles Mosley (Brighton, Tenn./Brighton): Mosley picked up recent scholarship offers from Vanderbilt, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State and Arkansas State. He already held offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia,  Ole Miss and Tennessee. The 6-5, 353-pound prospect has said Alabama is his leader, followed by Tennessee. Credit the Crimson Tide for identifying him early.

DT Jashon Robertson (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell): Robertson, who is 6-3 and 280 pounds, committed to Vanderbilt in June. He has shown no interest in other schools.

DT Michael Sawyers (Nashville, Tenn./Ensworth): Tennessee is the most recent school to offer a scholarship to the 6-2, 290-pound Sawyer. The Vols did so on April 29. Sawyers also recently picked up offers from Miami, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Washington, Wake Forest, North Carolina State, Purdue and Washington State. Sawyers is set to visit Tennessee on May 4.
