Weekend recruiting wrap: SEC

By Derek Tyson

The dead period is over, and this was the first of three official visit weekends remaining before national signing day on Feb. 5. Several top prospects visited SEC schools, there were some commits, and there will be a few announcements this week. Here’s a closer look at the latest recruiting news from around the SEC:

Biggest commits: Georgia is already feeling the effects of new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt on the recruiting trail. The Bulldogs were able to land two ESPN Junior 300 commitments, Rico McGraw (Nashville, Tenn./The Ensworth School) and Terry Godwin (Hogansville, Ga./Callaway), over the weekend.

McGraw, a cornerback is the No. 81-ranked player in the 2015 class, and Godwin is the No. 15-ranked player overall next year.

Georgia now has three total 2015 commitments, all of whom are ranked in the ESPN Junior 300.

Biggest visits: There were several key visits this weekend, including No. 1-ranked wide receiverMalachi Dupre (River Ridge, La./John Curtis) and five-star defensive end Lorenzo Carter (Norcross, Ga./Norcross) to LSU. Dupre’s visit was important, considering he was leaving Baton Rouge and heading straight to Alabama for another visit.

LSU, meanwhile, has recently made a push for Carter. Georgia and Florida appeared to be the teams to beat, but LSU has made up serious ground. Carter is still considering a visit to Florida State next weekend and will take his final visit to Georgia the weekend before signing day.

Top tweets: There were other key visits this weekend, including four-star cornerback Chris Lammons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Plantation), a former Florida commit, visiting South Carolina, four-star defensive tackle Matt Elam (Elizabethtown, Ky./John Hardin) to Alabama, ESPN 300 safety Mattrell McGraw (River Ridge, La/John Curtis) to Texas A&M, ESPN 300 wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) and four-star defensive end Andrew Williams' (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing) to Auburn. Here’s a look at some of the top tweets from players who posted photos or tweets about their weekend visits.

Commmitment announcements: Former USF athlete commit Deiondre Porter (Tampa, Fla./Jefferson) visited Florida over the weekend. The three-star prospect was considering visits to Wisconsin, UCF and Miami, but said on Sunday that he would be announcing his decision on Monday. The Gators, who offered Porter a scholarship, appeared to be the clear favorite to land the talented athlete last week.

In addition to Porter, wide receiver Eric Lauderdale (Fayetteville, Ga./Saddlebrook College) announced he would be making his decision next Saturday. The junior college wideout is down to Florida and Arizona State.
