When Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff touched on scouting at the NFL combine, he noted the value of experience. Specifically, Dimitroff spoke about how a veteran scout can effectively compare a prospect to a pool of past players who had a similar skill set.

With this in mind, we thought we'd put our own one-year twist on it by looking at last year's Patriots draft picks and matching their combine/pro day results with those from this year's class to see who might be a comparable prospect.

Obviously, combine-type testing is only a small part of the story, which is important context.

Today's focus is on linebacker Jamie Collins (second round, 52nd overall):

Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 250 pounds
Hand measurement: 9 3/4
40-yard dash: 4.64
Vertical jump: 41.5
Broad jump: 11'7"
3-cone drill: 7.10
Bench press: 19

2014 comparable: Collins' workout was remarkable, with the broad jump setting a combine record. This year's best jump was Ohio State's Ryan Shazier at 10'10". Collins' vertical leap of 41'5" would have ranked second among linebackers this year, behind only Shazier. The 4.64 time in the 40-yard dash would have tied for third with LSU's Lamin Barrow. In terms of the closest comparable when factoring in body type and testing results, Buffalo's Khalil Mack is a good match. That's a high compliment to Collins.
