Penalty watch: Not special teams
By Mike Reiss
In updating this week's "penalty watch," a few notes that stand out:
1. The Patriots entered Sunday's game against the 49ers with just two special teams holding penalties on the season. They had three against the 49ers, on linebacker Mike Rivera, cornerback Marquice Cole and fullback James Develin.
2. Rivera drew a holding penalty as part of the punt team.
3. Guard Logan Mankins had a two-penalty day -- false start/low block -- after committing just one penalty up to that point this season.
4. The illegal shift penalty was defined as "team," and thus not assessed to a player.
The full breakdown of the season (includes declined penalties):
With two infractions against the 49ers, Logan Mankins tripled his season penalty total.
