Picked-up Patriots pieces

By Mike Reiss

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Some picked-up pieces from around the Patriots:

1. Because the Patriots had 90 players on the roster at the start of training camp, there weren't enough lockers for every player. So that has had some rookies sharing a locker, such as rookie tight end Zach Sudfeld and rookie receiver Kenbrell Thompkins. Safe to say they'll soon have their own lockers. In another effort to create more real estate for players, the club also had a row of permanent lockers inserted in an area of the locker room that used to be more open.

2. The official designation used by the Patriots in releasing receiver Kamar Aiken was "waived/injured", meaning that Aiken would revert back to injured reserve if another team doesn't claim him. Aiken flashed at times in training camp, and while he'd be a longshot to earn a roster spot in 2014, his presence would add depth.

3. Second-year linebacker Dont'a Hightower was one player drawing a larger media crowd on Monday and one of the topics he discussed was his growing comfort level. "I definitely feel like this year I can be the extra vocal leader or the extra leader by example," he said. Earlier in the day, Bill Belichick had praised his versatility, smarts and durability.

4. Receiver Danny Amendola said he has been impressed with the team's rookie receivers, noting, "Guys are coming to work willing to learn and put forth the effort. [It's a] good group of guys. They should have some haircuts by tomorrow." That's an annual tradition for the Patriots, the veterans giving the rookies a buzz.

5. The Patriots still must make two roster moves before 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. The team is hosting its "Patriots Premiere" kickoff event tonight (private ticketed event).
