Analysis of Patriots-Bengals inactives

By Field Yates

CINCINNATI -- The big news relating to the New England Patriots' inactives is that wide receiver Danny Amendola did not make the list, meaning he will play in today's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

After previously ruling out tight end Rob Gronkowski, running back Stevan Ridley and safety Tavon Wilson, the team had to declare four more players as inactives, listed below:

Guard Chris Barker
Linebacker Steve Beauharnais
Wide receiver Austin Collie
Wide receiver Matthew Slater

For the Bengals, the following players were declared inactive:

Offensive lineman Mike Pollak
Offensive lineman Tanner Hawkinson
Running back Rex Burkhead
Defensive end Michael Johnson
Wide receiver Ryan Whalen
Defensive back Leon Hall
Defensive back Brandon Ghee

QUICK-HIT THOUGHTS: As it relates to the Patriots, none of the inactives qualify as a major surprise. Barker and Beauharais both were inactive last week for depth purposes, while Collie was signed this week and the Patriots will have Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson in addition to Amendola, meaning they are in good shape at receiver. Slater was listed as doubtful as he continues to nurse a wrist injury.

On the Bengals front, they'll be without their best secondary player in Hall, something that bodes well for the Patriots' passing attack, as well as top defensive end Michael Johnson, their franchise tag recipient this offseason. The Bengals' defense still will be a steep challenge, but playing without those two makes things a little easier for the Patriots.
