Extra draft pick coming to Patriots?
By Mike Reiss
ORLANDO, Fla. -- One item of business that is expected to be taken care of here at the NFL's annual meeting is the awarding of compensatory draft picks.
New England Patriots followers know all about the value of those selections because the 199th overall selection in the 2000 draft, quarterback Tom Brady, was a compensatory pick.
In short, compensatory draft picks are awarded by the league based on a complex formula determining if a team has a net loss in free agency from the prior year (salary and playing time are part of the formula).
