ORLANDO, Fla. -- The New England Patriots were awarded a fourth-round compensatory draft pick by the NFL on Monday, which is a pleasant surprise for the club based on the projection of analysts.
The selection is the last of the fourth round, 140th overall, and cannot be traded.
Teams receive compensatory draft picks based on a complex formula that determined the Patriots suffered a net loss of compensatory free agents from the prior season.
The Patriots now have eight draft picks:
Fourth round (compensatory)
Sixth round (from Eagles)
Note: The Patriots traded their fifth-round pick to the Eagles last October for defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga and a sixth-round pick.
