Butler has been on the physically unable to perform list all season after tearing his ACL during OTAs in June. But Tuesday is the last day that PUP list players can begin practicing. If the Saints decide to let him start practicing this week, then they will have a three-week window to decide whether or not to activate him on their 53-man roster or place him on injured reserve.
I think Butler is an extreme long shot to return to the 53-man roster this year, since he’d be returning from a torn ACL in just six months. But I know Butler has said he wants to give it his best shot. I imagine the Saints will at least decide to let him practice for three weeks, just to get him out there and help with his rehab, if nothing else.
The New Orleans Saints need to decide by Tuesday whether to allow linebacker Victor Butler to begin practicing or to place him on season-ending injured reserve.
