A position-by-position look at the New Orleans Saints' draft needs, ranked in order of importance from 1-12:
Current depth chart:
Jimmy Graham, unsigned under franchise tag
Benjamin Watson, signed through 2015
Josh Hill, scheduled to become restricted free agent in 2016
Draft possibilities: I’d be surprised to see the Saints draft a tight end as high as Round 1 since they’ve already got their long-term starter at the position in Graham (I’m confident they’ll work out a long-term deal this offseason).
However, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see New Orleans add a tight end at any point after that if they have a high grade on a prospect. Backup Benjamin Watson is 33 years old. And even though the Saints like the potential of second-year backup Josh Hill, they always make room for three or four tight ends on the roster and rotate them into the offense.
This year’s tight end class isn’t considered all that deep, with only one surefire first-rounder (North Carolina’s Eric Ebron). Two others that could sneak into Round 1 are pass-catching threats Jace Amaro from Texas Tech and Austin Seferian-Jenkins from Washington.
