Galette, agent deny report of extension

9/2/2014

Junior Galette and his agent both strongly denied a report by Yahoo! Sports that the linebacker had agreed in principle on a new contract with the New Orleans Saints.

After the report was released, Galette tweeted:

Galette also told The Times-Picayune via text, “Rumors. I haven’t agreed to anything. Trust me I’m more shocked den u r.”

Later, Galette’s agent Alvin Keels also tweeted:

Galette, 26, has two years remaining on his current deal with the Saints. However, the final year can be voided if he tallies 12 sacks this season – matching his total from 2013 – and if his playing time surpasses 60 percent of the Saints’ snaps over the course of the 2013-2014 seasons.

Both are attainable goals for the 6-foot-2, 258-pound pass-rusher, who had a breakout season last year in his first season as a full-time starter.

Galette, who joined the Saints as an undrafted rookie out of Stillman College in 2010, signed his current three-year, $7.5 million deal in 2013, when he was a restricted free agent. He is due $2 million this year and $2 million next year in salary and bonuses. If the final year voids, he will be required to pay back $900,000 of his signing bonus.

Galette was also elected as a defensive captain by his teammates this year for the first time -- joining veteran captains Drew Brees, Zach Strief, Curtis Lofton, Thomas Morstead and Ramon Humber.
