Saints' Ryan remains confident in White

By Mike Triplett

METAIRIE, La. -- New Orleans Saints cornerback Corey White got picked on by the Atlanta Falcons last week during his first start of the season in place of injured veteran Jabari Greer. But defensive coordinator Rob Ryan continued to express confidence in the second-year pro on Saturday.

Rookie Falcons receiver Darius Johnson caught six passes for 67 yards with White in coverage -- and White was also flagged for a 31-yard pass interference penalty against Johnson. However, most of the throws came on quick slants and comeback routes against White, who was playing off-coverage throughout the game. And White never let anything get deep behind him in the 17-13 victory.

"I think Corey did an excellent job," Ryan said. "I know if you're just charting [you'd say], 'Well, he gave up that completion for four yards.' But he played the way we wanted him to play. And he played really well.

"It's tough when you're startin' in this league. And we weren't giving him much help out there, either. He was manned up a lot, and I thought he really came through. He played really well in the San Francisco game when he took over [following Greer's season-ending knee injury]. And he played really well in the Atlanta game. Again, this a young player that's ascending. He's getting better every week. He works hard like all our guys do."
