METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints lost an intriguing developmental prospect on Wednesday when receiver/kick returner Chris Williams was signed off their practice squad to another NFL team’s roster, according to Saints coach Sean Payton. The team was not specified.
Williams was a star kickoff and punt returner in the Canadian Football League. And the Saints out-recruited several other teams for his services earlier this season when he was let out of his CFL contract. Payton even said that Williams had turned down the chance to leave for another team’s active roster at one point. But this time, Williams apparently decided to leave for another opportunity.
To replace Williams, the Saints signed rookie receiver Charles Hawkins, a speedy local New Orleans product who went to Southern and spent time with the Arizona Cardinals in training camp and on the Detroit Lions' practice squad this season.
