The Jets won on a Billy Cundiff field goal in overtime.
What it means: After losing David Baas and Victor Cruz on the opening drive of their previous preseason game and David Diehl to thumb surgery during the week, the Giants watched Brown go down untouched on an interception return, clutching his left knee. He couldn't put any weight on his left knee. The team initially called the injury a knee sprain.
It was an ugly game for the Giants outside of David Wilson's 84-yard touchdown run and the defense taking advantage of a mistake-prone Jets offense that had five turnovers.
Brown down: Brown's injury could be a potentially big one for the Giants, who are already without Antrel Rolle (ankle). Rolle has been making his way back quickly and should be ready for the opener, but if Brown is out for an extended period of time, Ryan Mundy will be the next man up.
Will Hill came in with the starters alongside Mundy after Brown was injured, but Hill will serve a four-game suspension at the start of the regular season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The Giants also have Tyler Sash and rookie Cooper Taylor at safety on the depth chart.
Successful return: Terrell Thomas played in his first game since tearing his right ACL on Aug. 22, 2011.
Thomas, making a third comeback from a right ACL injury after undergoing surgery again last year, mostly covered the slot receiver as an extra defensive back with Prince Amukamara and Aaron Ross starting. While Thomas made it out of the game healthy, the Giants did lose backup cornerback Jayron Hosley to an ankle injury. The defense was already playing without Corey Webster (knee/groin).
Dead zone: The offense struggled yet again in the red zone, failing to punch the ball in despite a first-and-goal at the Jets' 4. Andre Brown was stuffed on a third-and-goal at the 2 despite the Giants using four tight ends in a big package. On fourth-and-goal, an Eli Manning pass for Hakeem Nicks was broken up in the corner of the end zone.
The Giants' starters also had a first-and-10 at the Jets' 23 off of Brown's interception but gained only 1 yard before settling for a field goal. In the previous preseason loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the Giants had the ball four times at the Colts' 12 or better and failed to score a touchdown.
Overall, Manning completed just eight of 20 passes for 83 yards while being sacked once. The revamped offensive line, which included Jim Cordle at center and Justin Pugh at right tackle, appeared to have some communication issues and needs more time together.
The Giants also had four consecutive penalties on one Jets offensive drive in the first quarter.
Wilson explodes: Wilson had his first big run of the season, taking his first carry of the game 84 yards to the end zone. Will Beatty and Brandon Myers helped open a hole on the left side, and Wilson was gone. Wilson finished with 92 yards on five carries. Brown, who also served as the team’s third-down back and goal-line back, had 17 yards rushing on seven carries.
What's next: The Giants close the preseason at New England on Thursday.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. –- Another preseason game, another starter goes down as the New York Giants lost safety Stevie Brown during a 21-18 defeat to the New York Jets.
