The New York Jets started the process of paring the roster to 75 by the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline, announcing the release of seven players Saturday night. There were no surprises.

Free-agent kicker Andrew Furney, who made a 51-yard field goal in the final seconds to beat the Indianapolis Colts in the preseason opener, was among the seven released. So was punter Jake Schum.

Veteran tackle Bruce Campbell, a former fourth-round pick of the Oakland Raiders, also was released. He was signed early in training camp for depth purposes. Also cut were running back Michael Smith, guard Patrick Ford, tackle Markus Zusevics and linebacker Steele Devitto.

The Jets' roster stands at 81, not counting cornerback Dexter McDougle and wide receiver Shaq Evans, both placed on injured reserve. Linebacker Antwan Barnes, who's on the physically-unable-to-perform list, counts on the roster for now. They have six moves to make by Tuesday.
