Jets' Antonio Cromartie gets picked on

By Rich Cimini

Because the New York Jets aren't accustomed to uneven cornerback play, the recent hiccups by Antonio Cromartie have been glaring.

Cromartie
Cromartie has allowed three touchdown passes, including the 55-yarder to Emmanuel Sanders in Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cromartie caught a break earlier in the game, when Antonio Brown dropped a would-be touchdown on him.

Rex Ryan defended Cromartie, claiming, "I think he’s played really well." Injuries could be contributing to Cromartie's inconsistency. He has been dealing with a hip issue since the preseason and he "re-hyperextended" his knee in the game -- the same injury he suffered last Thursday in practice.

"I wasn't in too much pain (Sunday)," Cromartie told ESPN New York 98.7 FM on Monday. "I really didn't get all the pain until probably midway through the third quarter, just the pounding and stuff. I actually re-hyperextended it again, but I just stayed in the game."

Cromartie played every defensive snap.

The Jets need Cromartie to be the Cromartie of 2012. His superb play last season made the Jets feel better about trading Darrelle Revis. But so far, Cromartie hasn't played like a No. 1 corner.

"Unlike a lot of teams, we put him in some tough situations," Ryan said. "With our defense, we try to do what’s best for the whole defense, and sometimes that’s going (to create) some tough opportunities for guys. Cro’s been beat on a couple of touchdowns that are tough. (We) put him in coverages where he has no help, but I’ve done that because I believe he’ll make the play. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t."

Here's the problem: No one in the secondary is making any plays. The Jets have a league-low one interception, and that came in Week 1 (Dawan Landry). They've gone 207 pass attempts without a pick.

"Am I shocked that we have one interception all year? Yeah," Ryan said. "I’d be shocked if we only had one a game. Quite honestly, yes, it’s very disappointing."
