New York Jets: injury report

Injury report: CB Ellis Lankster (jaw) out

PM ET
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets cornerback Ellis Lankster (jaw) was not at practice during the portion open to the media Tuesday. Lankster missed Sunday's game with a jaw injury suffered against Carolina on Dec. 15.

The Jets were also without tight end Kellen Winslow (knee) but that's part of his schedule. Winslow sits out Wednesdays because of chronic pain in his knee, and because of the holiday, Tuesday is serving as a Wednesday for the Jets' practice purposes.

The Jets are otherwise healthy. They didn't suffer any injuries in their 24-13 win against Cleveland on Sunday.

Injury report: Hill could be done for year

December, 11, 2013

PM ET
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets head coach Rex Ryan did not rule out the possibility receiver Stephen Hill might not play the rest of this season due to swelling in his knee. Hill sat out Sunday's win over Oakland and did not practice Wednesday. He was in the bike area during the open portion of practice.

"I don't know. We'll see," Ryan said about Hill's season being over. "Obviously we'd like to get him out here if he can play and can be effective. That would the best-case scenario for us. We'll see how it progresses."

Hill
Ryan acknowledged Hill's knee injury has slowed him, particularly during his recent funk. In Hill's past four games, he has just one catch for 2 yards. Through 12 games, he has just 24 catches for 342 yards and one touchdown. He's hauled in fewer than half of his targets this season.

"I think we've all been like, 'What's going on here?' and I think it's become clear he's had some swelling, some issues with his knee where he hasn't been able to burst out of breaks and things like that," Ryan said. "He was practicing, he was gutting it out, he'll do those things. How much [has that] helped him? Obviously [it] hasn't helped him a whole lot. We're trying to get him back to where he can really run and burst out of cuts and things like that."

The Jets traded up in the 2012 draft to acquire Hill, giving up fifth- and seventh-round picks to grab the Georgia Tech product. Hill hasn't fulfilled expectations, though, as he barely has made a difference and hasn't been a threat on the outside. The pick looks even worse considering Chicago receiver Alshon Jeffery, who was chosen two picks after Hill, is fifth in the NFL in receiving yards.

Ryan admitted that Hill's progression doesn't look good at the moment. He said he doesn't regret the selection, though.

"Really, by Year 3, I think that's the big one, you'll know if this guy has really hit it [or] this guy maybe hasn't been as good," Ryan said. "Certainly by the numbers, I understand you expect [a] certain amount of production, but there's some contributing factors here. I know one thing: He had a great training camp and we were all excited. I was excited about seeing him make those steps. Sometimes you're limited through different things."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring) will miss his fourth straight game Sunday against Cincinnati. Holmes did not practice Friday and has yet to practice since suffering the injury against the Titans Sept. 29.

Holmes hinted Thursday he would not be returning until after the Jets' bye week in Week 10. The Jets will face New Orleans next weekend before having their bye, and they return Nov. 17 at Buffalo. The Jets are 2-1 without Holmes, who has 243 receiving yards and a touchdown.

"At this point, I think the bye week is coming at a great time, giving me what, five, maybe six weeks to get healthy," Holmes said Thursday. "Should be ready to roll."

Center Nick Mangold (ribs) is questionable after being limited in practice all week, but Jets coach Rex Ryan said Mangold will be good to go against the Bengals. Mangold hasn't missed a game this year.

Tight end Jeff Cumberland (hamstring) is probable after having a limited practice Friday. Cumblerland missed Wednesday and also had a limited practice Thursday. He reiterated Friday he'll be ready Sunday.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland said he will be good to go Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals as he nurses a hamstring injury. He returned to practice in a limited capacity on Thursday.

"I'll be all right," Cumberland said.

Cumberland's hamstring tightened up on him throughout this past Sunday's game, and he missed Wednesday's practice.

Receiver Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) was limited on Thursday, but said it was just a precaution and he's fine. He took a while to get loosened up during the portion of practice open to the media.

"Just a little cold outside. I'm a Texas boy. Not used to this out here," Kerley said.

Receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring/foot) missed his second straight day and it's not looking as if he will return Sunday against the Bengals.

Injury Report: Tone time in Cincy?

PM ET
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets coach Rex Ryan is unsure whether receiver Santonio Holmes (foot/hamstring) will return Sunday against Cincinnati. Despite having a helmet on and stretching with the team Wednesday, Holmes did not practice and hasn't worked since suffering the injury Sept. 29.

"Holmes is progressing," Ryan said. "I know he's working awfully hard so hopefully he'll be out there soon."

Tight end Jeff Cumberland (hamstring) also did not practice Wednesday, but Ryan is optimistic Cumberland will be ready for Sunday. With Kellen Winslow suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, Cumberland is the starting tight end.

"I think he's going to be OK, but we held him out today," Ryan said.

Jets injury report: Milliner, Tone out

PM ET
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Despite doing some positional work on Thursday and Friday, Jets cornerback Dee Milliner will miss his third straight game this weekend when New York plays Pittsburgh. He believes he'll be ready to play in next week's divisional home game against New England.

"It's just some tightness. When I [am] running, whenever I get to a certain level, I feel uncomfortable," Milliner said. "It's getting better each time that I've been doing it and progressing, so I'm feeling great."

Milliner has not practiced since injuring his hamstring on Sept. 25. The first-rounder has struggled with injuries in his brief time with the Jets.

"Very frustrated the injuries occur," Milliner said. "Wish I was out there on the field. Wish I was out there playing. You're going to go through things, it's how you overcome."

The Jets will also be without receiver Santonio Holmes (foot/hamstring), while cornerback Antonio Cromartie (knee) is questionable after hyperextending his knee. Jets coach Rex Ryan said Cromartie is a game-time decision.

Tight end Kellen Winslow won't play after being suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Practice report: Still no Holmes

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring) didn't practice Wednesday. He was wearing a sweatshirt and shorts during the portion of practice open to the media.

Holmes suffered a strained hamstring Sept. 29 during the Jets' loss to Tennessee. Holmes did not practice last week and it appears he will not suit up Sunday against his former team, Pittsburgh.

Cornerback Dee Milliner (hamstring) did individual work off to the side during practice. He suffered a hamstring injury Sept. 25 during practice and has not practiced or played since. It's too early in the week to know whether Milliner will have a chance to suit up Sunday.

Safety Jaiquawn Jarrett was not working during the portion open to the media. He was riding a stationary bike. Jarrett was not listed on last week's injury report, but Jets head coach Rex Ryan will provide an update on the safety when he meets with the media later.

The Jets were also without tight end Kellen Winslow (knee), defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis (back) and wide receiver Clyde Gates (knee). Ellis missed for a personal reason, while Gates was present during the open portion but did not work. Winslow was not on the field.

The Jets also made roster moves, signing defensive tackle Terence Barnes to the practice squad and releasing defensive tackle Junior Aumavae.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes (foot) did not practice on Thursday due to a planned day off, according to Jets head coach Rex Ryan.

Offensive lineman Oday Aboushi (knee) was injured during practice and Ryan said the team will not know the extent of the injury until Friday. He was injured in a one-on-one pass rush drill.

"Hopefully it's not that serious," Ryan said.

Linebacker Quinton Coples (ankle) practiced for the second straight day as he returns from surgery on his right ankle following a hairline fracture. Coples is still uncertain about whether he'll play Sunday against Buffalo. He said his ankle feels fine.

"It's totally up to the training staff," Coples said. "Whatever they say I'll be prepared for."

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who is battling a hip injury, said he's feeling better. He acknowledged he's essentially been playing on one hip in the first two games.

"Honestly it's probably about the best I've felt in five weeks. Probably since my first day of training camp," Cromartie said. "It's just been a nagging injury, actually finally starting to feel a whole lot better. This is probably as close to 100 percent as I'm going to get. I'm feeling real good right about now."

PM ET
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson (concussion/knee) is probable for Sunday's game after a full practice on Friday. The lineman, who said he does not have a concussion, said he passed his tests and will play. Wilkerson has been one of the Jets best players this year and having him on the field will be a big boost.

Tight end Dustin Keller (ankle), quarterback Greg McElroy (abdomen/concussion), wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee) and linebacker Bryan Thomas (chest) are all doubtful for Sunday. They all did not practice on Friday, and before listing those four, Jets coach Rex Ryan seemed to hint they won't play by saying, "All these players are doubtful, and we know that that means." Ryan already said McElroy won't play and Keller has missed the three games with a high-grade ankle sprain.

The Bills will be without pass rusher Mark Anderson (knee) and tight end Scott Chandler (knee).

Keller doesn't practice, McElroy missing

December, 28, 2012
12/28/12
12:33
PM ET
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Dustin Keller was at Jets practice today, but worked off to the side and away from individual groups yet again. He hasn’t practiced for three weeks with a “high-grade” ankle sprain, as Keller described it. Keller has likely played his last game of the season, and perhaps his last game as a Jet.

According to multiple reports, the tight end does not want a franchise tag at the end of this season.

On Thursday, Keller said he wanted to play in Buffalo if only because he didn’t want to go out on an injury given the uncertainty of next season.

“There’s not telling what next year is going to be,” Keller said. “I don’t know if I’m going to be here or somewhere else, so with that said I definitely would like to be able to play in this last game if it’s my last game as a Jet or if it’s just the last game until next year’s first game as a Jet. I’d like to play either way.”

Keller had been hoping the Jets would rework his contract in the offseason, given his steady improvement since being drafted in the first round of the 2008 draft. That didn’t happen, but Keller didn’t hold out. A quad injury early this season and the later ankle sprain have meant that Keller has played in just eight games this season. In four of those games he had two or fewer receptions.

“I looked at it like I’m not getting a new deal this year so that’s that. Just go out and play. That’s where I’m at right now. The unfortunate thing is I haven’t been able to play because of these injuries, so there’s not much I can do about that except just be in the training room every day. And rehab. And try to get back.”

His relationship with the Jets front office is strained, but that could change if new personnel is brought in. Keller has been one of the few consistent receivers for Mark Sanchez, and the two have definite chemistry. Sanchez is due $8.2 million in guaranteed money by the Jets' next season. Keller would be a good player to keep in the fold if Sanchez returns.

McELROY MISSING
: Greg McElroy, the Jets quarterback slated to start the Bills game, did not attend practice a day after revealing concussion symptoms to trainers and coaches. Mark Sanchez will start in his place, and Tim Tebow would presumably be the backup, although that’s a role he has never actually played.

TO THE SIDE: WR Chaz Schilens (knee) and LB Bryan Thomas (chest) worked off the the side during practice. Schilens may not play Sunday, but Thomas has played despite injury and a lack of practice during the week.

Injury report: Dustin Keller is hopeful

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Dustin Keller said he is hopeful that he can get into a practice, perhaps even the game in Buffalo this week. But it sounded like optimism in a season where he has been hampered by a quad injury, and now a "high-grade" ankle sprain.

The tight end did not practice on Thursday.

PM ET
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Quarterback Greg McElroy downplayed his abdominal injury, calling it a mild strain. He said he took every rep Wednesday in practice.

Muhammad Wilkerson, Dustin Keller and Ellis Lankster worked on the side during the early portion of practice, jogging lightly. Keller (sprained ankle) hasn't practiced in three weeks, so it's hard to imagine him being ready to play Sunday. Wilkerson and Lankster are dealing with concussions, so they must pass NFL-mandated tests before being cleared. Braylon Edwards, who aggravated his knee injury, didn't practice; initially, he was slated to be limited. Maybe the trainers backed him off because of the cold and snowy weather at practice.
