Gomez wins by TKO in NYC

Eddie Gomez of the Bronx improved to 15-0 (10 KOs) as he won a stoppage victory over Steve Upsher Chambers in a junior middleweight contest at the Best Buy Theater in Manhattan on Monday night.

Chambers pumped the jab on the shorter Gomez in the first. Gomez had him in serious trouble toward the end of the round, but the ref, Steve Smoger, known for being slow with the hook, let Chambers continue. Chambers looked a tad groggy in the second but defended well enough to hang around. He landed the occasional counter but not hard enough to back up Gomez. It was basically target practice for the Bronx boxer, as the Pennsylvania man spent more energy keeping covered up rather than landing, through three. The ref halted the bout in the fourth, with Chambers on the ropes, not long after he did some of his best work, and we wondered if Gomez was tiring. The end, with Chambers featuring a blank look on his face as he ate clean rights and nasty hooks, came at 2:33 of the fourth.

Gomez had a much easier time with Chambers than did ex-147-pound champ Luis Collazo, who took a unanimous decision in eighth from Chambers in October 2012.
