NY fight fans have never been so consumed with an eye.
The right eye of Antonio Margarito, which was busted up by Manny Pacquiao in Nov. 2010, needs to be cleared by a doctor chosen by the New York State Athletic Commission before he can receive a license to fight his scheduled Dec. 3 scrap against Miguel Cotto. We are getting word that Margarito, who had been training in Mexico for the event, which is set to unfold -- or not -- at Madison Square Garden, is being seen by a Dr. Mike Goldstein in Manhattan as we speak (2:47 PM).
The commission will convene 2 p.m. Tuesday at its headquarters, in a hearing open to the public. No commission person will be in contact with Dr. Goldstein until he shares the findings of his exam on Margarito, a source tells us. His promoter, Top Rank, will have the opportunity to discuss the findings and ask questions.
Then, the commission will have an executive session to discuss the findings, and it will then return to the open hearing, and render a decision on whether Margarito is medically cleared to fight in New York.
