More on vandalism, media day cancellation

By Michael Woods

Sergio Martinez was supposed to do a media workout at a gym in Ventura, Calif., on Tuesday, but that event was cancelled on Monday afternoon, because of "an incident of vandalism" and threats made to the boxer.

New York-based promoter Lou DiBella made a statement about the circumstances which forced the event to be scrapped, a few weeks out from the middleweight clash pitting the favored Martinez, his fighter, against the current WBC middleweight champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

"This past weekend Sergio received threats from an unknown source and the car in front of his home was vandalized," DiBella's statement said. "Unfortunately, until we have a security team in place, we are going to have to suspend any and all public and media appearances for Sergio, including the upcoming media day scheduled for tomorrow. ... We apologize for the inconvenience to the media and fans that have planned on attending tomorrow's event."

Another source close to the Martienz camp told NYFightBlog that someone "threw paint all over one of the cars on the property and all over the front entrance of the house" and "threw paint on the inside of the car as well."

Boxing, the theater of the unexpected, indeed.
