Not much wiggle room for Nets this summer

The Brooklyn Nets are over the salary cap, meaning they can’t be anywhere near as extravagant as they were last offseason, when they committed around $330 million in current and future contracts to upgrade their roster.

“We need some more shooting on the bench to space the floor,” Nets GM Billy King said Thursday. “The core is going to stay intact. It’s going to be a lot of little pieces.”

Andray Blatche and C.J. Watson are Brooklyn’s key free agents. Watson, a 41.1 percent 3-point shooter last season, will indeed opt out of the final year of his contract ($1.1 million) and become a free agent, a league source told ESPNNewYork.com; King said Friday he expects that scenario to happen, meaning the team could be in the market for a backup point guard to replace him.

Blatche is an interesting case because he still is due $16 million in amnesty payments from the Wizards over the next two seasons, and the Nets could conceivably offer him the chance to start at power forward as well.

Because of their cap situation, the Nets can only offer free agents -- including Blatche and Watson -- the minimum, assuming they give most or all of their taxpayer “mini” mid-level exception to European sharpshooter Bojan Bogdanovic. Multiple sources said earlier in the offseason that both sides are optimistic a deal will be reached to bring Bogdanovic over.

While King has said he doesn’t necessarily have to make a trade, Kris Humprhies and his $12 million expiring contract could prove to be a big chip now or in the future.

The Nets hold the 22nd pick in the June 27 draft, and could look to take a shooter -- like Allen Crabbe or Reggie Bullock -- at that spot.

There are moves for the Nets to make. Just don’t expect them to make a huge one -- though with King, you never know.
