NEW YORK -- Joe Johnson caught fire from beyond the arc -- dialing long distance with ease -- and the rest is history.

Johnson tied an NBA record by hitting eight 3-pointers in the third quarter of the Brooklyn Nets' 130-94 demolition of the putrid Philadelphia 76ers Monday night at Barclays Center.

Johnson had 29 of his 37 points in the third. He finished with a career-high 10 3-pointers -- two shy of the league record -- on 14 attempts.

Michael Redd also hit eight 3s in a quarter on Feb. 20, 2002, when he was with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Johnson's 29 third-quarter points (10-for-13 field goals, 8-for-10 3-point range) were the most he's ever scored in a quarter, and the fifth-most points scored by one player in a quarter in league history. George Gervin (April 9, 1978) and Carmelo Anthony (Dec. 10, 2008) share the record with 33 points.

And get this: Johnson did not play in the fourth quarter because the game was so out of hand.

The Nets (9-15) scored a season-high 42 points in the third and led by as many as a season-high 42.

WHAT IT MEANS: The Sixers (7-19), who have lost seven in a row since Michael Carter-Williams went down with injury, don't play defense, which allowed Johnson and the Nets to exploit them for a season-high 130 points and a franchise-record 21 3-pointers. Brooklyn shot a season-high 60.3 percent from the field. Deron Williams had a season-high 13 assists in 29 minutes. Andray Blatche had his third consecutive 20-point game.

BY THE WAY: Brook Lopez missed his second straight game due to a re-sprained left ankle. The Nets didn't need him.

UP NEXT: Practice Tuesday, then the Washington Wizards Wednesday at home.
