Notes: Nets over Thunder

January, 3, 2014

Here are a couple things about Thursday night’s buzzer-beating win over the Oklahoma City Thunder:

•’s Marc Stein chronicled the game from OKC. Writes Stein:

Pounding on a locked door in the hallway adjacent to the visitors' locker room, looking for some solitude to soak in the best win of his young coaching life, Jason Kidd felt a tap on the shoulder from an unlikely well-wisher.

"Good job, Coach," Russell Westbrook stopped to tell Kidd on his way out of Chesapeake Energy Arena. "Good job."

"Fourteen has gotten off to a good start," Kidd declared after buzzer-beating specialist Joe Johnson's latest gem delivered a 95-93 triumph over the shellshocked Thunder.

"It's a new year."

Read it here.

We wrote about Johnson as well. It was his sixth buzzer-beater since 2007-08, fourth with the Nets and second this season. According to, Johnson is 6-for-6 in the final 10 seconds of regulation or overtime when the Nets are behind or trailing by three points or less.

• The Nets started their small lineup against the Thunder: Deron Williams, Shaun Livingston, Johnson, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. In 27 minutes on the floor together this season, that unit has produced a plus-49.2 net rating, according to, which is pretty ridiculous. It’s definitely a lineup that coach Jason Kidd should continue going to.

• Stein capped his piece writing about Williams, who had six 3-pointers and a season-high 29 points:
“I have to be more aggressive like this every day. And hopefully I can do that. That’s a good way to start the new year. It’s a clean slate, I guess, and hopefully we can build on it.”
