KG channels his inner MJ in Boston

BOSTON -- Yes, Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd compared his 37-year-old center to the man who is considered by many to be the greatest player of all-time.

And yes, it is as hilarious as it sounds.

With the Nets up 80-77 Sunday night and the Boston Celtics looking to tie, Kevin Garnett made one of those heady veteran defensive plays he’s become known for throughout his career. Garnett intercepted a pass from former teammate Rajon Rondo at midcourt, and went “coast-to-coast” for a layup that gave the Nets a five-point lead with 17 seconds left.

They were able to hold on for an 85-79 victory at TD Garden, improving to 10-1 since the new year.

And that prompted Kidd to say: “He’s done it all year for us defensively, he’s always in the right place at the right time and he looked like Michael Jordan there at the end.”

Said Garnett: “I knew they were trying to run a pick-and-roll and Rajon Rondo was gonna try a 3-pointer. I knew they needed a 3 at that point and I just played the passing lane.

“It took me two days to get the layup up. I thought I was gonna get caught, but I got it still, put the ball in front of me and got the layup.”

Deron Williams actually played great on-the-ball defense on Rondo before Garnett came up with the steal.

“We were trying to bounce back Jeff [Green] in the corner,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “We ran a variation of the play before it, and curled Jeff to the rim. [Andrei] Kirilenko went under the screen and we tried to jam it for him. Might’ve been open for a split second, but probably a good decision not to throw it. But then get it to Rondo and play in space. And [Kris Humphries] kind of set a ball screen and [Brandon] Bass came and followed it with another, and our spacing was really good on that play, and that happens sometimes.

“I thought we were where we needed to be, but we weren’t able to manufacture it. They did a good job defending it.”
