The Nets point guard has been plagued by injuries to his ankles and currently has a sore knee as well. Not participating in this weekend’s All-Star Game, Williams can probably use the time to let his body get stronger.
“I just want to get healthy again, man,” Williams said. “If I get healthy, I know what can happen. It’s been a frustrating two years for me injury-wise. It’s something I can’t really control. Hopefully I can figure it out this summer and then go from there.”
"Williams has missed 16 games this season due to injuries to his ankles. In the 11 games he has played since missing five games due to cortisone shots and platelet-rich plasma injections in both ankles, Williams is averaging 12.6 points and 6.1 assists.
Right now it's just a matter of him getting better each time he's taking the floor, and he's done that." -- Nets coach Jason Kidd
Williams wants to regain the form that made him a three-time All-Star from 2010 to 2012. He admitted that his confidence had taken a hit due to all the injuries.
Initially upon returning after the cortisone shots, Williams came off the bench and tried to get his game going with the second unit. He eventually returned to the starting lineup and has played alongside Shaun Livingston as Jason Kidd goes with a two-point guard lineup to allow Williams to be more offensive-minded.
Last year, Williams underwent cortisone shots and platelet-rich plasma treatment before the All-Star break. He averaged 22.9 points, 8.0 assists and 48.1 percent shooting from the field after the break.
The Nets hope Williams can repeat that this year.
“With some of the injuries that he's had early on, for us it's a matter of him playing well going on from here and into the playoffs and next season,” Kidd said. “Right now it's just a matter of him getting better each time he's taking the floor, and he's done that.”
Even though Williams isn’t going to New Orleans this weekend, Joe Johnson still views the point guard as an All-Star.
“He’s definitely an All-Star in our eyes,” Johnson said. “I think for him, he just wants to get healthy to where he can get back to his stardom form. We need him to lead us as a team. And for us to be pretty good, he has to be ready."
