Nets start youth movement

Just when you thought the Brooklyn Nets had given away all their future assets, they start accumulating some.

With the pending acquisition of Sergey Karasev (20), the Nets all of a sudden have a decent stockpile of prospects that is expected to include Bojan Bogdanovic (25), Mason Plumlee (24), Markel Brown (22), Cory Jefferson (23) and Xavier Thames (23).

Are there any future All-Stars in that mix? It remains to be seen. But at least they have some young pieces they can either develop, stash or use in a future trade.

The Nets had sent three unprotected first-round picks (2014, 2016, 2018) and the right to swap firsts (2017) to the Boston Celtics in the blockbuster trade that saw Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce end up in Brooklyn.

If Pierce ends up departing as an unrestricted free agent, it’ll be hard to view that deal in a very favorable light, given that the Nets would’ve sacrificed several future assets for five playoff wins.

But it’s hard not to be impressed with what Brooklyn GM Billy King has done here, bringing in several young players on the cheap without having to sacrifice much to get them.

Bogdanovic’s rights were acquired on draft night in 2011 in exchange for cash considerations; He will agree to a three-year, $10.3 million contract with a third-year player option. Plumlee was selected with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2013 draft. The rights to second-rounders Brown, Jefferson and Thames were all purchased on draft night weeks ago for a combined $1.9 million. And Karasev, the No. 19 overall pick in the 2013 draft, was acquired in a deal that sent just Marcus Thornton’s expiring contract to Boston.

As for Brooklyn’s massive salary players ... well, that’s a different story.

But at least there’s some reason to be excited about the future -- even if it’s unknown what exactly the future holds -- besides an all-out pursuit of Kevin Durant, should he hit the free-agent market in the summer of 2016.
