Thibodeau, not Carlesimo, wins award

Brooklyn Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo must be breathing a sigh of relief.

Despite leading the Nets to an 11-4 record in the month of January, Carlesimo avoided the dreaded NBA Eastern Conference Coach of the Month award, given to the Chicago Bulls' Tom Thibodeau for the month of January.

Avery Johnson won Coach of the Month in November after guiding the team to the same mark. But he was fired after getting off to a 3-10 start in December.

Johnson appeared on SportsCenter earlier Friday. The former Nets coach said he’d like to get into coaching “at some point,” but was enjoying coaching his son, Avery Jr.

Johnson was very complementary of the job Carlesimo has done since replacing him.

“The coaching staff that I hired, to continue to see the work that they’ve done since I left is just great.”

• Power forward Kris Humphries played just two minutes in Wednesday night’s 105-85 loss to the Miami Heat. The Nets have a glut of fours -- Reggie Evans and Mirza Teletovic -- and none of them have really taken a stranglehold on the position.

“It’s not a good situation,” Carlesimo said Friday morning. “You can’t play through mistakes.”

Giving out minutes and solidifying a rotation at power forward has been a problem.

“It’s the logjam at 4 and 5, which has been there all year, and how the game evolves. It’s when you get in the game and how you do,” Carlesimo said. “If you’re in the wrong place and guys get offensive rebounds over you or something like that, you’re not going to be in the game very long.”
