Magic, Van Gundy on Kidd as a coach

By Mike Mazzeo

ESPN analyst Magic Johnson wished Jason Kidd all the best in his quest to get the Nets' head coaching job in a tweet Monday.

Good Luck to Jason Kidd as he tries to become the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. @realjasonkidd

Johnson coached the Lakers on an interim basis for the final 16 games of the 1993-94 season, compiling a 5-11 record.

Fellow ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy doesn't know how Kidd will fare as a head coach, but told the Daily News that he has all the tools to succeed.

"I think certainly Kidd had a remarkable career, a remarkable basketball IQ and a poise that was exceptional," Van Gundy said. "Now you don't know how that's going to translate but I would think he would have a great chance to have it translate exceptionally well. When you're moving from an assistant to a head coach, it's an unknown, too. I went through that. I didn't even know if I'd be any good at it. Deep down you don't know until you do it. But unless you give a guy a shot, it's a gamble if you're a general manager unless you’re getting someone who is a known quantity as a head coach in the NBA."
