Starting five: Favorite J-Kidd moment?

By Mike Mazzeo

NEW YORK -- Prior to Thursday night’s preseason game against the Heat, the Nets will retire Jason Kidd’s No. 5 jersey and send it to the rafters.

No other player in franchise history will ever be able to wear it again.

“We can do it right now,” Kidd joked Tuesday night. “Just let it be quick. They can put it up, they don’t need to hear from me or bring anybody in.

“It is a great honor. It goes without saying, my coaches and my teammates are going up there too because they were a big part of that. I am very thankful. A lot of guys asked why is it not during the regular season. It was my choice. I wanted to get it, if we could have done it during training camp, I would have already done it. A preseason game, get it done with over, and then we move on. Because it is not about me, it is about the Brooklyn Nets. And these guys, my players. That is why we are doing it during the preseason and hopefully it will be quick.”

As a player, Kidd captained the Nets to back-to-back trips to the NBA Finals during his 6 1/2-year career in New Jersey. He now serves as the team’s head coach and minority owner in Brooklyn.

What is your favorite J-Kidd moment? Let us known in the comments section below.

Completely great: Joe Johnson told the YES Network that the Nets have the most complete team in the league.

Reward for what?: Kidd said Kevin Garnett got Tuesday night off as a reward for all he’s done during training camp. Garnett is also older and could use the rest. Don’t think KG thinks of it as a reward. He’d rather play. By the way, KG was sitting on the floor watching tape intensely in the locker room before the game.

Shed a tear: Paul Pierce thinks he’s going to shed a tear or two when he returns to Boston. That’s why he’s not exactly eager to go back to Beantown.

Waived: The Nets waived veteran Marko Jarkic. Their roster now stands at 18 players.

Day off: Following their back-to-back, the Nets are off Wednesday.
