Starting Five: Trade winds are calm for now

By Mike Mazzeo

The Los Angeles Lakers had exploratory trade talks with the Brooklyn Nets about a Pau Gasol-Brook Lopez swap before Lopez went down with a season-ending broken foot injury, sources told ESPN.com colleague Marc Stein. The Nets balked at the idea, Stein writes.

Stein also notes: “... Lopez's health misfortune extinguishes any realistic hope of Pau-for-Brook talks re-igniting between now and the Feb. 20 trade deadline.”

Lopez is owed $32.5 million over the following two seasons. He signed a four-year, $60 million max contract in the summer of 2012.

You can expect the Nets to be active in trade discussions as the season progresses.

GM Billy King recently said nothing was imminent and he did not wish to be a seller at this time. But if the season continues to go south, you wonder if that will change.

Question: If you were King, what would you do with this roster? (Keep it clean.)

In case you missed it: Deron Williams needs to pick up his play, while it’s best if Joe Johnson and Paul Pierce don’t play together.

Fearza: In his last five games, Mirza Teletovic is averaging 15.8 points and shooting 42.5 percent from 3-point land.

Up next: Practice Monday and then a New Year’s Eve contest at the San Antonio Spurs.
